Sticky Notes in the Digital Workplace

Sticky notes have long been the unsung heroes of offices, homes, and classrooms around the world. These small pieces of paper with re-adherable strips of glue on the back have transformed the way we capture thoughts, organize tasks, and even brainstorm big ideas.

We see parallels of this in our online tools, for example, Kanban boards, shared document comments, etc., but what about everything else in our digital workplace?

Bridging the Gap Between Digital and Physical

In a physical environment, we can stick a note on anything to mark something of significance, e.g., labeling a finnicky light switch from tripping an important circuit or marking your territory in the fridge. The possibilities are endless – you can get pretty creative.

In the digital workplace, comment functionality largely depends on the software that you’re using. Some tools support it and some don’t. We’ve analyzed many use cases, and what we find interesting is that comments in content management systems are usually not as helpful as we’d like them to be. For example, when you add a comment on an article there are two major caveats: one, the comment usually lacks visibility restrictions. Is it a public article? Likely your comment is public too. Dropnote is intended for private organization discussion only. Two, the comment is at the bottom of the page. It’s like an archive of knowledge. Managing the information there is not typically a core focus of the product.

Dropnote is a simple addition to your workflow that allows placing comments, much like what you see in a document editor, directly next to text on any page. We intentionally designed these comments to be visible, and not comments that are hidden or require interaction to view. Our goal is to bring the core value of sticky notes into your digital operations. You can’t miss a sticky note when it’s stuck to something, and we want to scale this value across all of your sites.

It is not as easy as it sounds to support all web sites, but the core idea is that simple: comment anywhere. We also believe that any product’s success hinges upon ease of use. Sticky notes are quite straightforward, and one of our goals is to provide a similarly intuitive experience in the virtual world.
